Scientists have now discovered that a compound found in red wine - resveratrol, from the skin of grapes - blocks an enzyme that causes depression and anxiety.

Researchers from New York’s University of Buffalo used mice to test the effects of resveratrol on mental health.

The mice were given super-strength doses of resveratrol, which is an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory already proven to combat diseases from cancer to arthritis and dementia.

The study concluded that resveratrol may be an “effective alternative” to traditional antidepressants.

Since resveratrol is known to be safe thanks to common use in food supplements, it wouldn’t require safety studies.

Unfortunately, you can’t drink your problems away. While red wine does contain some resveratrol, at only 2mgs a glass, consuming enough for the antioxidant to be effective would kill you.

Mice were given the equivalent of up to 10mg of resveratrol per kilogram of their body weight. In a 70kg human, this would require a dose of 700mg.

That’s a whopping 350 glasses of red wine.
