Dentist Ends Debate About Brushing Your Teeth Before Or After Breakfast

Are you team 'before' or 'after'?

Since the dawn of time... or, well, dental hygiene, people have argued over when we should brush our teeth in the morning. 

Some staunchly believe that you should take to your mouth with a toothbrush as soon as you wake up. Get rid of that morning breath, and freshen up before eating. 

Others think it's nasty mess up a clean mouth with breakfast or worse, coffee, and believe you should defo brush your chompers after your first meal. 

Leandra Medine of Man Repeller looked into this intense debate recently, taking to Twitter to ask the public where they stand. Surprise, surprise: the results came in at fifty-fifty. 

So, in the name of journalism, she spoke with a dentist to get to the bottom of the debate. 

She chatted to Dr Paula Small who said:

“The conversation is passionate amongst those in the field as well; toothpaste is not necessary from a plaque removal point of view and [people are] not genetically susceptible to the same issues so there is no universal right or wrong.”

The dentist explained that there are great reasons to brush either before or after breakfast.

However, if you are one of the people who brush after eating Dr Small does have a warning:

“Brushing too soon after consuming acidic food and drink, like coffee, orange juice, or sugary pastries and cereal, can cause faster breakdown of the enamel."

So, there you have it. We're both good, but team 'before' is just in a slightly better position.
