Smokers Are Now Spending '$10,000' A Year As Tax Hike Comes Into Effect
Pack-a-day smokers are about to fork out even more for their habit.
If you’re a smoker take note, because the habit is about to become a whole lot more expensive.
The Federal Government is increasing the tobacco excise by 12.5 per cent as of today, and it will increase by the same percentage again on September 1, 2020.
The staged tax hike has been increasing by 12.5 per cent year-on-year since 2017.
Abby Smith, the director of Cancer Council's anti-smoking campaign Quit Tasmania, told the ABC:
"A pack-a-day smoker will [now] spend over $10,000 a year, which is a tremendous burden for some people.”
Might be time to stub out for good.
