Are we next?

Smokers beware, your habit is about to be kicked.

For those living in North Sydney, the council is hoping to "claim back the streets" with a unanimous vote in favour of a smoking ban in the entire CBD, according to the Daily Mail.

Speaking to Nine News, North Sydney Mayor Jilly Gibson says:

"I am absolutely thrilled that it went through, I’ve been working on this for a long time.

"There was actually a mood amongst the councillors, which I agree with, that we might try to extend it the whole municipality.

"We used to accept all sorts of things from smokers, smokers had all the rights, now I believe it’s the time of the non-smoker."

According to the media outlet, there was support for the ban from thousands of people working and living in the area.

Australia is already one of the most expensive places in the world for cigarettes with costs reaching nearly $40 a packet in our 2018 Budget.

Treasurer Scott Morrison announced in September 2018 that smokers will be paying even more for a packet of cigarettes.

The decision to ban cigarettes in North Sydney comes after smoking bans were introduced in Pitt Street Mall, Martin Place, the Tamworth CBD, all public areas in Strathfield, parts of Manly, Bondi, Bondi Junction and Hurstville.
