A huge fire has broken out in Coolaroo, putting 18 surrounding suburbs on high alert

Coolaroo recycling centre has broken out into flames - the large blaze is creating a plume of smoke across Melbourne.

Surrounding suburbs have been put on high alert.

A warning has been issued for Broadmeadows, Campbellfield, Coburg, Coburg North, Coolaroo, Dallas, Fawkner, Glenroy, Hadfield, Jacana, Meadow Heights, Oak Park, Pascoe Vale, Pascoe Vale South, Roxburgh Park, Somerton, Strathmore and Westmeadows.

A duty forecaster told 3AW -

“The plume of smoke and associated ash is streaming pretty much due southwards from Coolaroo... across to Essendon and down over the city centre and St Kilda area and then over the bay.

“That corridor and suburbs are the ones being primarily affected.”

Locals have taken to social media with their images.

One person tweeted -

“Another fire at a recycling centre - this time Maffra St Coolaroo.”

Another wrote -

“I just stepped outside in Pascoe Vale, and there’s ash falling.”

Residents are being urged to stay indoors - particularly those with lung or heart problems.
