Where you can find Melbourne's best hot chips

1 min read

Hot Chips. They're the actual best. But if they're not the actual best, they're the actual worst.

We set about tasting as many of the chips as we could find in Melbourne, and a good sleep and whole lot of water later, we're ready to let you in on the best ones... Here's the top 6, based on flavour, crispness on the outside, fluffiness in the middle and general awesomeness, which is more about vibe than anything else... These 5 are equals in many ways, we couldn't really split them, so you can't go wrong with any of these options, and they're presented in no particular order. Check it!

Look, from the front, this may not be the obvious choice for food in Seddon, but trust us, you need to try the chips. They will transport you back to the 80s. Perfectly fried, crinkle cut chips, a quarter chook with some gravy and maybe even a salad on the side, and you're all set.

2. BIGGIE SMALLS, Collingwood

What do crinkle cut chips need? Preserved Lemon and burnt butter? Why the hell not. This Kebab joint, run by Melbourne superchef Shane Delia, rolls out stunning chips hot and fresh every day. Well worth taking the time!

Fitzroy & Prahran No fuss here, just classic crinkly crinkle cut goodness, sprinkled lovingly with Old Bay Seasoning, a classic US spice mix! The chicken is excellent, as well.

4. 8-BIT, Footscray

Proving that West is indeed Best, we have another Inner West option here for your chip-hungry tastebuds. Hand cut, nice and dark, fluffy in the middle. You can't go wrong here, and the burgers and shakes complement the chips beautifully.

5. HUXTABURGER, Collingwood, Hawthorn, Footscray, Melbourne CBD

Prahran, Melbourne CBD, Hawthorn Ditching their crinkle cut option for a beer-battered fry may have been controversial, but they're just so damn tasty we're gonna forgive them. Again, the burgers are worth the visit alone, but get some fries, either straight up or with a chipotle seasoning and you'll be back for more before you know it! Crinkle Cut seems to win the day, here! Which is your favourite?
