"When a family member gives you a second chance at life..."

Sarah Hyland's past few years have not been smooth sailing.

Unfortunately toward the end of 2016 the kidney started to fail, Hyland received a second transplant from her brother Ian in September 2017.

The Modern Family star revealed to Self magazine she "was very depressed" and contemplated suicide while undergoing her second kidney transplant.

“I was very depressed. When a family member gives you a second chance at life, and it fails, it almost feels like it’s your fault. It’s not. But it does.

“For a long time, I was contemplating suicide, because I didn’t want to fail my little brother like I failed my dad.”

Hyland says the doctors did everything they could in order to save the initial kidney donated from her father.

“We did all of these tests and all of these treatments to try and save the kidney.

“Christmas break, New Year’s, Thanksgiving, my birthday, all of that spent in the hospital.”

However, there is a silver lining for Hyland. The actress met boyfriend Wells Adams who has been nothing but supportive. From defending Hyland against online trolls and being by her side through her worst times.

“He’s seen me at my worst.

“I think that’s why I feel the most beautiful in his eyes, because he still finds me beautiful after seeing all that.”

She has spoken about the impact the disease has had on her health and weight a number of times in recent years.
