Sarah Hyland Bares Major Surgery Scars On Instagram
She’s had 16 surgeries and two kidney transplants.
Sarah Hyland is one tough woman.
Not only is she our absolute favourite Modern Family character (Haley Dunphy is our spirit animal) she’s also a survivor.
As well as living with endometriosis, Hyland suffers from kidney dysplasia - a condition which has seen her undergo 16 surgeries over her lifetime.
She’s also had not one, but two kidney transplants. One from her father in 2012, and another from her brother in 2017 after her body rejected the first transplant.
Hyland has been very open about the lasting effects of such extensive surgeries on her body including the abdominal swelling she experiences, caused by her new kidney connecting to the old ones.
She’s even given the bloated spot on her stomach a nickname - KUPA - which she says stands for her “kidney upper pussy area”.
In a 2018 interview, she explained:
"It's this bittersweet moment of 'Oh my gosh, I have a new life!' but then also being an actress and being held up to this sort of pedestal of how you're supposed to look. Sometimes I have complete meltdowns in the middle of fittings, being like 'KUPA will show.'"
An advocate for body acceptance, Hyland bravely took to Instagram to reveal the scars from her surgery, using the hashtag #showyourscars in celebration of her own:
Fans praised the actress for her realism, with many who also experience kidney issues posting about how her post has inspired them:
“Seeing your scar brings a smile to my face. It’s barely noticeable and to see you’re doing so well helps calm my nerves as I have surgery for kidney transplant on this coming Tuesday,” one fan shared.
Another wrote: “I Love it show your scars. I’m a Living Donor. So the scars in my body are my beauty marks.”
Another fan commented that she calls her kidney surgery scar her “badge of life”.
Hyland’s journey has been a difficult one.
In 2018, she revealed in an interview with Self that she had contemplated suicide after her first kidney transplant failed.
"I was very depressed. When a family member gives you a second chance at life, and it fails, it almost feels like it's your fault. It's not. But it does.
“For a long time, I was contemplating suicide, because I didn't want to fail my little brother like I failed my dad."
Hyland is now healthy and living the ultimate #couplegoals life with her fiance Wells Adams.
