Karl Stefanovic Reveals Why He Wasn’t Surprised He Got Axed

"It had taken its toll…”

Following his sacking from the Today Show, Karl Stefanovic was probably the most talked about celebrity on Australian TV.

Speaking at Channel 9's post-Logies recovery brunch, Karl told news.com.au that he was really struggling towards the end of 2018:

"It’s been about six months since I was on the telly, and I needed to have a rest. Towards the end of last year, I was cooked,” he said.

"It had taken its toll, a lot of the attention — all the unwarranted attention I thought, and you can’t control any of that, I’m not going to complain too much about that, but what it meant was that in a work capacity I don’t believe for a second I was at my best."

Even though many of his fans were shocked to find out about Nine's decision, Karl admittedly knew it was coming:

“So it wasn’t a great surprise to me — in fact it was a relief in many ways — that I was taken off the Today show. Because I just wasn’t at my best and you can’t be doing that show unless you’re at the top of your game."

Karl was dropped in December 2018 after ratings had taken a dramatic turn. Last August The Daily Telegraph reported that the Today Show had its worst ratings  in four years, and that Sunrise had beaten it out in most audience areas.

A source told The Sydney Morning Herald that the “final straw” was Karl and Jasmine Yarbrough’s extravagant wedding in Mexico.

Gold Logie winner Tom Gleeson joked with Karl about the wedding during his opening monologue at the event last night:

"Channel 9 were happy to cash in on (MAFS’) ratings by showing off your tacky weddings — and fired Karl Stefanovic for having one. Karl, we need you back. When will they take you off the bench? The Today Show needs you. I was on the Today Show the other day to promote the Logies. Ratings are so low I felt like I was keeping a secret."

Even though we don't wake up to Karl every morning, he will be returning to our small screens with This Time Next Year in the coming months.
